Small children are easily interested in small creatures and primary schools in Britain find the study of such animals a good starting point for much of the curriculum. The generic term for these small creatures most often used in British Primary Education is “minibeast”.
In other places such as the U.S.A. “Bugs” is the common term.
“Minibeast / bug” is a term for a variety of arthropods and other invertebrates, including spiders, ants, butterflies, bees, wasps, flies, woodlice, worms and many others.
Invertebrates are animals without backbones and make up the great majority of animal life, with 40,000 species in Britain alone and many millions on Earth.
Humans have an innate affinity to other living beings.
In recent years early educators have recognized this affinity in young children and encourage it in play, nature based environments and activities, outdoor time, stories and song.
This collection will focus on the small creatures that share our earth and depend on us to ensure their habitats on land, air or sea are fit for their very survival.
